What I Learned Building AI Tools for Real Human Problems
A behind-the-scenes look at why most AI feels useless and how we're trying to change that
When I first started experimenting with AI tools a few years ago, I was like everyone else: fascinated by the technology but frustrated by how... impractical most of it felt. It ignored the human element. Most importantly, generic AI couldn't account for the fact that you're not just a collection of symptoms or problems to solve. You're a complex human with relationships, constraints, fears, and dreams that all influence what advice will actually work for you.
The Lightbulb Moment
The breakthrough came when I stopped asking "How can AI solve this problem?" and started asking "How would an expert who really understands this problem approach it?"
I began reaching out to professionals: therapists who'd helped thousands of people with anxiety, sleep specialists who understood why your brain won't shut off, relationship coaches who'd seen every type of communication breakdown imaginable. I wanted to understand not just what they recommended, but how they thought through problems.
What I discovered was fascinating. Great experts don't just apply generic solutions. They ask specific questions, consider individual circumstances, and adapt their approach based on what they learn. They understand that the person dealing with insomnia who works night shifts needs completely different strategies than someone whose sleep issues stem from relationship stress.
So I started wondering: what if we could capture that expert thinking process and make it accessible through AI?
Building AI That Actually Helps
This is where things got interesting (and complicated). Creating AI tools that think like experts rather than search engines required a completely different approach:
Expert Collaboration, Not Expert Replacement
Instead of trying to make AI pretend to be a therapist or life coach, I partnered with real experts to train AI systems on their actual decision-making processes. Expert validation makes everything better. When people knew that the strategies they were getting had been developed with actual professionals, their trust and follow-through increased dramatically.
AI works best as a thinking partner, not an answer machine. The most valuable interactions weren't when AI provided solutions, but when it helped people think through their situations more clearly.
The Messy Reality of Helpful AI
Building AI tools for real human problems taught me that effective technology isn't always the flashiest. Our most successful tools don't generate stunning visuals or write poetry. They ask good questions, provide relevant options, and help people think through complex situations step by step.
It's messier than generic AI, more complex to build, and harder to scale. But when someone messages to say that an AI tool helped them finally get better sleep or approach a difficult conversation with confidence? That makes all the complexity worth it.
